Depending on the product and the depth needed, a levelling pour can range from a couple of millimetres as a “feather” edge up to 25mm or more in a single pour, with deeper corrections sometimes needing two passes.
It is a different category of product to the decorative overlays used for spray-on concrete or the epoxy base coats used in garage floors, though it often sits underneath both. Think of it as the flat, sound base layer, not the finish itself.
Why falls and low spots matter more than they look
A concrete slab is supposed to have a fall, a slight, deliberate slope, that moves water away from a house, a garage door or a pool edge. Falls are usually only a percent or two, barely visible to the eye, which is exactly why a fault in the fall often goes unnoticed until it causes a problem: a puddle that sits for days after rain, water tracking toward a garage door threshold, or a patch of pool surround that never quite dries out between summer swims.
A few things commonly cause a low spot or a bad fall on Central Coast concrete:
- Original construction error. Some slabs were simply never poured to a correct fall, particularly older driveways and paths from the 1970s-90s where formwork and screeding standards varied more than they do today.
- Settlement. Minor, uneven settling of the sub-base under one section of a slab creates a dip that was not there when the concrete was originally poured.
- Repairs and patches. A patch repair that was not screeded to match the surrounding level leaves a step or a dish exactly where the repair sits.
- Root movement. Tree roots can lift one section of a slab relative to another, changing the overall plane even where the concrete itself has not cracked.
Left uncorrected, a low spot does more than annoy: standing water accelerates the breakdown of a sealer, promotes moss and algae on shaded sections, and, on interior slabs before an epoxy coating, ponding during coating application produces an uneven film thickness that shows up as a visible flaw once it cures.
When self-levelling is the right fix
Self-levelling underlayment suits situations where the concrete itself is structurally sound, and the problem is purely about the plane of the surface, not the strength of the slab. Typical Central Coast scenarios:
- A driveway or path with a shallow dish that collects water after rain, otherwise free of major cracking.
- A garage floor with a slightly uneven, wavy trowel finish that needs to be dead flat before epoxy goes down, since epoxy telegraphs every undulation in the surface underneath it.
- A pool surround with a section that sits a few millimetres proud or low relative to the coping line, common where different sections were poured at different times.
- Patch repairs from earlier crack or spall work that were not finished flush with the surrounding slab.

Where self-levelling can’t help
Self-levelling underlayment corrects the surface plane. It does not fix a structural problem, and using it to paper over one is a common and expensive mistake.
- Ongoing settlement. If a section of slab is still actively settling (the low spot keeps getting lower over successive seasons), levelling compound poured today will simply follow the slab down again. The sub-base issue needs addressing first.
- Structural cracking with vertical displacement. A crack where one side of the slab sits noticeably higher than the other is a structural fault, not a levelling problem. Levelling compound can be used cosmetically over the top once the underlying cause is resolved, but it will not stop the crack reappearing on its own.

How self-levelling interacts with moisture

What a levelling job typically involves
- Assessment. The low spot or fall problem is measured, usually with a straight edge or laser level, to establish depth and area.

- Mixing and pouring. The compound is mixed to the manufacturer’s specification and poured or pumped across the area, then worked with a gauge rake or trowel to help it find its level.
